Fighting illiteracy

Although children rights concerning education are ensured by the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, although compulsory education has been legally established in both the developed as well as the less developed countries for many decades, the data regarding the lack in primary education of children and adults all over the world is shocking.

According to UNESCO:

  • About 115 million children do not attend school.
  • 100 million children do not have access to primary education.
  • 862 million adults have no education.

However, education and training for all are substantial as well as vital factors in order to free people from ignorance, and strengthen their skills so that they are able to improve the quality of their lives.

In the frame of its action, the “Foundation for the Child and the Family” has organised, supports and participates in meetings and conferences, such as the European Forum "Family - Europe - 21st century: Vision and Institutions" (1998), in Athens, and the Meeting of experts in Sorbonne with the topic: “The Child and the Family in the society of the 21st Century, in Europe” (1999), in collaboration with the European University.

Both these two international conferences particularly emphasised the living conditions of the underdeveloped groups of citizens who live in the developed countries, which consequently affect the development of children and illiteracy leading them to the marginalisation and impeding the possibility of their smooth integration to the society.

The “Foundation for the Child and the Family” also supports the UNESCO programme “Education for all” and the “Safe Schools” project of the “Jordan River Foundation” whose Chairperson is Queen Rania of Jordan.
