Support the family institution

A family is the primary prerequisite for the safe and decent development as well as the general progress and prosperity of a child. The family is the cell of the society as well as its foundation.
In the family, a child will be able to receive the love it need, have the values and principles that will determine its behaviour, the choices and a path in its live, all the essential protection it need until it is in position to protect itself and claim its rights on its own and all the support –either material or ethical– it need in order to open up to the world.

However, the family cannot comply with its role without support, knowledge and opportunities.

The family structure today has been changed and it keeps on changing. The new family models and parameters that influence its functionality, the new social reality that undermines its institution need to be extensively examined and to make us all care; Action must be taken collectively without exception, but mainly from the State. The family institution cannot be strengthened with prayers. It can only be strengthened if we actually focus on the reality experienced today by parents and children, grandfathers and grandmothers.

Who looks after the children today? How are the relations between the two parents? What is the role of the mother and what that of the father? Does the equality between the genders exist or not inside the family? What happens when both parents work? What happens when they are divorced? How do foster parents raise their children? What kind of information do parents have access to? Who supports them? Who advices them? What opportunities does the State give them so that they can raise their children? How does social security function within the State? We all ought to care and find solutions to all these questions as well as to many others.

In the frame of its actions, the “Foundation for the Child and the Family” has organised, supported and  participated in meetings, conferences and events aiming at the sensitisation and awareness of the common opinion on the importance of the family institution and the problems the family faces in the modern societies, such as the European Forum "Family - Europe - 21st century: Vision and Institutions" (1998), the Conference "Family and the Media" (1998) etc., while every year it honours the mothers who, in their own distinct way, demonstrate what a Mother with capital M is.
