The propagation of knowledge

Knowledge is a tool and wealth as well as a guide in everyone’s life. For this reason the education and access to the sources of knowledge and information is a fundamental right of the children, young people as well as adults. The development of personality and skills, ability of expression, conception of new ideas cannot exist without education and access to the sources of knowledge.

Communication and understanding among people are based on education and knowledge. Each person’s personal progress and prosperity depend on their education and the chance of enhancing their knowledge, broadening their minds. Moreover, social progress and prosperity depend on the education and knowledge of the members of every society.

Thanks to the propagation of knowledge we are able to know our roots, promote culture, upgrade our living standards, and advance towards the future. For all these reasons the more the beacons of knowledge are in the world -schools, universities, libraries- the more promising the future of humanity will be.

Since the very beginning, the “Foundation for the Child and the Family” has been by the side of those who envisaged the revival of the legendary Library of Alexandria, the creation of the new Library of Alexandria, precisely where the old one enlightened the ancient world. Thus, the Foundation organised lectures and meetings aiming at stressing the importance of the establishment of the new Library Alexandria, raising the awareness of the common opinion on this very important issue and mobilising prominent personalities and organisations in order to support the implementation of this vision.

The President of the “Foundation for the Child and the Family”, Ms Marianna V. Vardinoyannis, was one of the member of the first Board of Trustees of the new Library of Alexandria and today is a member of the Advisory Board of the Library of Alexandria. With her initiative the “Vardinoyannis Foundation” and the “Alexandros S. Onassis Foundation” financed the establishment of the “Centre for Hellenistic Studies” in the Library of Alexandria.

Furthermore, the “Foundation for the Child and the Family” has introduced libraries in schools of the border regions supplying books and computers. It is also active in the publication of books with informative content.
