ACTIVITIES

Her action at the "ELPIDA" Association of Friends of Children with cancer

In 1990, Mrs. Marianna V. Vardinoyannis founded the Association of Friends of Children with cancer "ELPIDA", aiming to help and support children suffering from cancer, as well as their families. Since then, she is the President of the Association.
Through her initiatives, she has succeeded to raise the awareness of Greek people on issues regarding children’s cancer and to mobilize society in order to contribute to the work of the Association.

By organising grand cultural events, exhibitions, artwork auctions, Christmas bazaars, etc., along with her personal contribution and the donations that were offered to "ELPIDA", Mrs. Vardinoyannis has achieved the following goals, during her Presidency term:

  • The creation of the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, at the Children's Hospital "Agia Sophia", in which 460 children have successfully undergone transplant surgery so far (data of February, 2009).
  • The construction and function of the "ELPIDA" Guest House, a modern five-storey building located next to the Children's Hospital "Agia Sophia". The Guest House was inaugurated on February 3rd 1999 and accommodates the children treated in the Transplant Unit along with their parents. It further hosts children with cancer from the Balkan as well as the Mediterranean Region.
  • The organisation of the First European Congress (Athens –March 1994) with the topic: "Europe with a human face - Aid for the sick child", under the auspices of the EU Commissioner, Padraig Flynn. The Congress aimed at exchanging of experience, establishing a network of associations similar to "ELPIDA" as well as a dialogue with the European Foundations.

  • The establishment of the EUROPEAN "ELPIDA" AWARDS, under the auspices of the EU Commissioner, Padraig Flynn, which aim to support and acknowledge the collaboration among social organisations, in their effort to solve the problems faced by children with cancer. The "ELPIDA" Awards are offered every four years and include a financial prize. The first European "ELPIDA" Awards ceremony was held under the auspices of the former President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Constantinos Stephanopoulos in the old Parliament Building in Athens, on March 11, 1996.
  • The organization of the Celebration for the 10th Anniversary of the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (BMTU) operating at the Children's Hospital "Agia Sophia", along with the Scientific Conference on: "The Transplant of Haemopoietic Cells", which were held at the Megaron, the Athens Concert Hall, on November 24th 2003. The event was held with the presence of the former President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Constantinos Stephanopoulos, and honoured all the supporters of "ELPIDA" and the contributors to the establishment and operation of the BMTU and the "ELPIDA" Guest House.
  • The organisation of a "Telethon" in co-operation with MEGA Channel and the "Foundation for the Child and the Family", aiming at raising money in order to support the children-victims of the war in the Balkan region. The amount raised was donated as follows:
    • The shipping of 120 tones of first aid, medication and clothing to the Balkan region affected by the war
    • The creation of a Surgery Centre at the Hospital of Gracanica in Kosovo, in cooperation with the "Medecins du Monde"
    • The construction of the Multicultural Children’s Center "Athina" in Zemun (New Belgrade), under the auspices of UNESCO.
  • The support of the earthquake victims in Athens (September 2000) by organising a special Unit for first aid, food and clothing supplies for the earthquake stricken area of the Municipality of Fili where tents and prefabricated houses were offered to the earthquake victims. Moreover, a special bank account was arranged for fundraising to support the victims.
  • The creation of the Rehabilitation Unit for alcoholics "Over 18", at the Daphni Psychiatric Hospital of Athens, which was destroyed by the earthquake.

Currently, Mrs. Vardinoyannis and the "ELPIDA" Association are working for the construction of the first Oncology Hospital for children in Greece, and which is expected to be completed in June 2010. The foundation stone was placed during an official ceremony in the presence of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr Karolos Papoulias, in April 2007.

The project is supported by the Greek Government and many fundraising events were organised for its accomplishment, such as: the concerts of Julio Iglesias (September, 1999), Vanessa Mae (May, 2000), Jean Michel Jarre (June, 2001) at the Herodion Theatre, the Ballet Lausanne - Maurice Bejart (June 2002) at the Herodion Theatre, the concerts of Andrea Bocelli (June 2003), Luciano Pavarotti (June, 2004), George Ntalaras and Dulce Pontes (June 2005), Marinela (June 2006), St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra (Ιούνιος 2007), Florence Maggio Musical Orchestra and others. Two grand Telethons were also organised in cooperation with Alpha TV (May, 2006) and MEGA TV (May, 2007) channels, etc.

Her action at the "Foundation for the Child and the Family"

In 1997, Mrs. Marianna V. Vardinoyannis founded the "Foundation for the Child and the Family", aiming at the protection of children’s rights and at the building of a better future for them. It is a Non Governmental Organisation (N.G.O.) with a Special Consultative Status at the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations Organisation.  Mrs. Vardinoyannis is the President of the Foundation. She :

  • collaborates with international organisations such as UNESCO, governmental and non-governmental local and international foundations,
  • participates in international forums and campaigns, such as the campaign for the elimination of mines in collaboration with Princess Diana of Wales, the campaign against human trafficking and the campaign for the protection of civilians during armed conflicts in collaboration with the First Lady of Egypt H.E. Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, the campaign for drug traffic prevention in collaboration with H.M. Queen Silvia of Sweden, the campaign for the humanitarian impacts of climate change in co-operation with the former Secretary-General of the U.N., Mr. Kofi Annan, the "YES" Campaign for the reinforcement and development of young people aiming at the elimination of poverty, and others.                                    
  • organises meetings, conferences and lectures, on topics related to education, health, the rights and protection of children, the culture of peace, the dialogue among civilizations and social solidarity, in Greece and the abroad, as well as on issues such as discrimination, sexual abuse and exploitation, paedophilia on the Internet, wars and violence, relevant to  children.
  • encourages, promotes and awards the research and efforts which serve high ideals and provide role models.

Some of the most important events organised since the establishment of the Foundation, thanks to her initiatives, are the following:

  • The European Meeting, with the topic: "Priority to the Dignity and Safety of the children of Europe" in Athens (1997), in collaboration with the "European Office for Missing and Exploited Children".
  • The Day-Conference with the topic: "International Convention for the Rights of the Child and the Role of the European Union", with the participation of members of the European Parliament and Representatives of the European Commission (1997).
  • The European Forum with the topic: "FAMILY - EUROPE - 21ST CENTURY: Vision and Institutions", in the Athens Concert Hall. The Forum was held under the auspices of the former President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr Constantinos Stephanopoulos, the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, Mr Daniel Tarschys, UNESCO, and was also supported by the European Commission (May, 1998).
  • The Day-Conference "Family and the Media" in Zappeion Megaron, with the participation of leading Greek and foreign journalists (October, 1998).
  • The Congress for "The Child and the Family in the 21ST century”, in co-operation with the University of Europe. The Congress was held under the auspices of the President of the French Republic, Mr Jacques Chirac, in Sorbonne, Paris  (May 31-June 1, 1999).
  • The European Conference for "Sexual Abuse of Children and Paedophilia on the Internet" under the auspices of UNESCO (December, 1999).
  • Events on the occasion of Mother's Day, during which "Mothers-Symbols” from Greece and abroad are honoured.
  • The "Meeting of Athens and Delphi on Children and Peace". The Meeting was held under the auspices of UNESCO, on the occasion of the International Year for a Culture of Peace, and launched the "Declaration of Delphi on Children and Peace"(June, 2000).
  • The event on "Child-Symbol of Hope, Will and Courage", aiming at rewarding and supporting children who fought for their visions, who overcame physical or financial difficulties, and whose efforts demonstrate their love for culture and education, their courage and heroism, as well as their morality and strength. The event was organised on the occasion of the anniversary of the International Convention for the Rights of the Child and the International Day of the Child (November 2000).
  • The International Conference on "The Child: Victim of War and Messenger of Peace" in Athens, under the auspices of UNESCO in the framework of the International Decade (2001-2010) for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence, for the children of the World (May, 2001).
  • The International Conference on "Modern Societies- Multicultural Coexistence. The position of the child", at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, held under the auspices of UNESCO (September, 2002).
  • The Second European Meeting of Legal Practitioners specialised on child pornography on the Internet and sexual exploitation of minors for commercial purpose. The Meeting was held under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Justice and the financial support of GROTIUS II project of the European Commission as a continuation of the first meeting held in Paris by the "Fondation pour l’ Enfance”. Fifteen countries of the European Union were each represented by a delegation of 3 people composed of judges, attorneys, and non-governmental individuals (March 2003).
  • The Exhibition entitled "Traditional and Contemporary Handicrafts from Jordan" in collaboration with Jordan River Foundation. The exhibition was held under the auspices of H.M. Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan, as well as UNESCO. The aim of the exhibition was the promotion of the intercultural dialogue, understanding, respect, and tolerance among people, via art and social solidarity (June, 2004).
  • The launching of the Declaration for the United Nations Millennium Development Goals in collaboration with 22 Greek Non Governmental Organisations. The Declaration was submitted to the ECOSOC for the High Level Segment (2005) and the United Nations Summit Meeting (September, 2005).
  • The Athens Round Table with the topic "Business Community against the Trafficking of Human Beings" in collaboration with "The Suzanne Mubarak Women's International Peace Movement". (January 2006)
  • The International Conference "Climate Change and Challenges for the Future Generations” under the auspices of UNESCO and in co-operation with TERI (The Energy Resources Institute) presided by the Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (Nobel Peace Prize 2007) Dr Rajendra Pachauri. The Conference was held with the presence of the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Kostas Karamanlis, and it launched the Athens Declaration on Vulnerable Children and Climate Change (June 2009).

Other activities of the "Foundation for the Child and the Family”:

  • A project for the reinforcement of the border regions of Greece, where three villages in Thrace –Myki, Diomidia and Genissea- as well as the island of Fourni  Ikarias have been reinforced and two Libraries  have been created and equipped in Prespas Triangle and Fourni.
  • A project for the treatment of the children born with AIDS (1997-1998)
  • A project for supporting the children forced to live with their mothers in Korydallos prison in Athens. Basic necessities were offered to mothers and children and the nursery, that operates within the prison, has been equipped with books and toys.
  • Participation at the Children's Peace Festival, held in Xanthi, Greece (July 2000, August 2001).

Her action at UNESCO

Acknowledging her social work, UNESCO appointed Mrs. Marianna V. Vardinoyannis as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, in a formal ceremony held at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, on October 21st, 1999. Since then, Mrs. Vardinoyannis has been participating in the Annual Meetings of the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors and the various events organised by UNESCO, both in and out of Greece as well as collaborating with the other ambassadors in many projects. Taking into account the priorities that UNESCO sets each year, Mrs. Vardinoyannis’ initiatives aim at her contribution to the current major issues of social, human, educational and cultural character. She combines these actions with the activities of the "Foundation for the Child and Family” and of the Association of Friends of Children with cancer "ELPIDA”, which she presides, as well as with her mission as board member of several international organisations.

Mrs. Vardinoyannis has been participating and supporting UNESCO projects concerning the protection of human rights, the protection of the world cultural and natural heritage, the elimination of illiteracy, the promotion of Culture of Peace, the promotion of the dialogue among different cultures, etc.
As a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, Ms Marianna V. Vardinoyiannis has undertaken, among others, the following tasks:

  • To represent the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koichiro Matsuura, during the events for the promotion of the Cultural Olympiads on international level.
  • To sponsor several events and projects such as a special project for the education of girls in Gaza (September 2009), the international Festival for the World Day of Cultural Diversity held in the UNESCO headquarters in Paris (May 2008),  the first international workshop on the prevention and handling of dangers emanating from natural disasters on International Heritage monuments, organised by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre in Ancient Olympia (November 2008), the project «Safe Schools» of the Jordan River Foundation of Queen Rania of Jordan (2007), the Concert of Purcell School which took place at the UNESCO Headquarters for the promotion of music education and the support of young talents, with the attendance of Prince Charles (February 2003), and more.
  • To organise conferences, exhibitions and other cultural events, such as the International Conference "Women in the Service of Peace" held at the UNESCO Headquarters  in collaboration with "The Suzanne Mubarak Women's International Peace Movement" (June, 2004). The aim of this event was to highlight the important and substantial role that women play in establishing Peace among peoples and to defend their rights to be recognised as full partners in the processes of decision-making and political negotiations. She further organised the exhibition entitled: "The Unity of a Unique Monument: the Parthenon" held at the UNESCO Headquarters  in collaboration with the Foundation "Melina Merkouri" (April, 2003); the Painting Exhibition of women artists from the Islamic World with the title "Breaking the Veils" was organised at the UNESCO Headquarters under the auspices of H.M. Queen Rania of Jordan, in collaboration with FAM Network, in the framework of the celebration of the Universal Women’s Day (March 2003); the concert of George Dalaras at the Herodeion Theatre in Athens (June 2003) in order to support the project for the restoration of the Agia Sophia Church in Constantinople (June, 2003); the exhibition of photography on the World Cultural Heritage in Venice (November 2002) and in the United Nations Headquarters in New York (December 2002); Jean Michel Jarre’s concert at Herodion aiming at the construction of the First Paediatric Oncological Hospital in Greece, where, Jean Michel Jarre performed the Hymn to the Acropolis for the first time worldwide (June, 2001), etc.

She further organised many international conferences, under the auspices of UNESCO, such as the first European Forum "Family - Europe – 21st Century: Vision and Institutions", the "Meeting of Athens and Delphi on Children and Peace", "The Child: Victim of War and Messenger of Peace", "Sexual Abuse of Children and Paedophilia on the Internet", "Contemporary Societies - Multicultural Co-existence: The position of the child", "Climate Change and Challenges for the Future Generations”, etc.

  • The promotion of projects such as the project «Innocence in danger» for the protection of children from sexual abuse and paedophilia through the Internet, the «Education for all» project for the elimination of illiteracy, the project for  «sustainable development of our planet emphasising on climate change», the project for «Confronting Natural Disasters», the project for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, the project for the protection of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, the initiatives for the Restoration of the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem, and the Agia Sophia Church in Istanbul, and more.

Other initiatives:

  • She funded the creation of the Early Childhood Resource and Training Centre in Bethlehem, in the framework of the UNESCO programme "Bethlehem 2000". The foundation ceremony took place on April 6, 2000, under the auspices of Mrs. Suha Arafat. During her visit, she had an official meeting with the President of the Palestinian Authority, the late Yasser Arafat, in Ramallah. The Centre is included in the "Chain For Peace" program of the "Foundation for the Child and the Family”.

The same project includes the Multicultural Children’s Centre in Belgrade (municipality of Zemun) which was established under the auspices of UNESCO and the collaboration of the "Foundation for the Child and Family” and the "ELPIDA Association”, in order to support the children-victims of the Balkan war as well as a Surgery Centre created at the Hospital of Gracanica in Kosovo, in cooperation with the "Medecins du Monde".

  • She participated in the Film "Children of Peace" (a UNESCO production) with a special message, among other personalities such as Dalai Lama, Kofi Annan (Nobel Peace Prize), Simon Peres (Nobel Peace Prize), Yasser Arafat (Nobel Peace Prize), Rigoberta Menchu Tum (Nobel Peace Prize), Federico Mayor (former Director-General of UNESCO), and others.

 

  • Her article about UNESCO was included in the book entitled: "60 women contributing to the 60 years of UNESCO”.

Her action at "The Suzanne Mubarak Women's International Peace Movement"

Marianna V. Vardinoyannis as a member of the Board of Directors of "The Suzanne Mubarak Women's International Peace Movement" has undertaken many initiatives for the promotion of the Movement’s goals and the reinforcement of its campaigns, apart from her constant presence at the annual board meetings and her participation in the international conferences, fundraising events, etc. organised by the Movement.

  • She attended and supported the fundraising dinner for the children of Palestine held in Cairo (May, 2005).
  • She organised lectures of H.E. Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak in Athens (May 2005, July 2007).
  • She organised the Fairuz concert in Athens, aiming at supporting children-victims of Lebanon and the Middle East (July 2007).

  • She was a sponsor of the International Institute for Peace Studies, established at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
  • She organised the Round Table of "Business Community against Human Trafficking” in collaboration with Movement, under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the sponsorship of Motor Oil. The Round Table, organised in Athens, put forward the launching of the global campaign "End Human Trafficking Now". Its aim was to raise the awareness of the business community and commit them to an ethical code "The Athens Principles” against human trafficking. The Round Table was attended by H.E. Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, H.M. Queen Silvia of Sweden, H.H. Shaikha Sabeeka of Bahrain, Dr Boutros Boutros-Ghali, the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Jean Michel Jarre, and others. On this occasion and in order to support the campaign, a fundraising dinner was organised which was attended by prominent personalities from the world of politics, intellect, business and arts. Mrs. Vardinoyannis was also member of the Movement’s delegation which accompanied Mrs. Mubarak and presented the "Athens Principles” at the World Economic Forum in Davos (January, 2006).

  • She organised the International Seminar with the topic: "Women in the Service of Peace", at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris (June 2004).
  • She participates in the group of experts for the protection of civilians during armed conflicts, and attended the two meetings –the first one was held in Paris in September 2006 and the second in Alexandria in January 2007.
  • She supported and participated in the first International Youth Forum for Peace organised by Movement in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, which aimed at giving young people the opportunity to demonstrate their power and their abilities for the construction of a better world (September, 2007)

  • She attended the International Conference «Crossing Borders to Protect the Children of the World» in Cairo which was organised by the Movement in co-operation with ICMEC. (February 2009)
  • She attended as a speaker and supported the International Conference "Human Trafficking at the crossroads of East- West" held in Manama, Bahrain, under the auspices of  H.H. Shaikha Sabeeka Bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of H.M. the King of Bahrain.  (March 2009).

Her action at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Mrs. Marianna V. Vardinoyannis was member of the Board of Trustees of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, since its foundation until 2008. Up to the present, she serves as member of the Advisory Board.

Apart from her regular participation in the Annual Board Meetings as well as the most important events held in the Library –the inauguration, the 5th Anniversary, scientific conferences, cultural festivals, etc.- she has organised lectures and press conferences of the Director of the Library Dr. Ismail Serageldin, in Athens and in Rethymno (Crete), in order to make the Library’s work known in Greece.

She undertook many initiatives for the advancement of the Library’s work, such as the establishment of the Centre for Hellenistic Studies which was inaugurated in October 2008 and has been operating since.

The establishment of the Centre for Hellenistic Studies, which is officially named "The Alexandria Centre for Hellenistic Studies", was funded by "the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation” and the "Vardinoyannis Foundation”. It aims at the promotion of Greek culture abroad as well as the history of Hellenistic era during which the ancient Library of Alexandria was founded. Faculties of History, Philosophy, Literature and Fine Arts are composing the Centre. It was inaugurated in November 2008 in a ceremony held under the auspices of H.E. Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak.

On European/International Level

Mrs. Vardinoyannis co-operates with several NGOs and institutes from all over the world, such as: Fondation pour l`Enfance (France), AVEC (France), International Peace Bureau, Hague Appeal for Peace, Noor Al-Hussein Foundation (Jordan), Jordan River Foundation (Jordan), University of Europe (France), Robert F. Kennedy Memorial (USA), and others.

In this framework, she participated in conferences, congresses, fundraising events, many international as well as European meetings, such as:

  • The First World Congress on Sexual Exploitation of Children, in Stockholm, which was held under the auspices of H.M. Queen Silvia of Sweden. (August, 1996)
  • The Summit of the "Fondation pour l'Enfance" in Paris, for the presentation of the work of the "European Office for Missing and Exploited Children", where she was a keynote speaker. (November 1997)
  • The International Conference on Missing Children organised by INTERPOL and the "Fondation pour l'Enfance", in Lyon-France. (March 1999)
  • The Hague Appeal for Peace Conference, in The Hague, where she spoke on the subject "Building a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence". Within the framework of the Conference, she organised a special panel in cooperation with the International Peace Bureau and the Friends' Association of Children with Cancer "ELPIDA”. The panel dealt with the subject of "The effect of radioactivity on children's health", aiming at making an appeal for the abolition of nuclear tests and wars around the world. (May 1999)
  • The International Conference "Global Solidarity: the way to Peace and International Cooperation" organised by the Department of Public Information of the United Nations, in New York (August, 2000).
  • The "International Conference for a Culture of Peace" organised by the Foundation for a Culture of Peace, in Madrid, where she addressed the Opening Ceremony of the Conference. (December 2000)
  • The Second International Conference of FAM Network (Women - Mediterranean Creators) for the Culture of Peace, held in Rhodes (September 2002)
  • The International Nights for the Child organised annually at the Chateau de Versailles by the "Fondation pour l'Enfance".
  • The fundraising dinners for the Anniversary of the "Charter of Paris against Cancer” organised by AVEC and Prof. David Khayat.
  • The Award Ceremonies and the fundraising galas organised by H.M. Queen Silvia of Sweden for the support of the Mentor Foundation.
  •  The establishment of the Global Humanitarian Forum under the leadership of Mr Kofi Annan held in Geneva, aiming at raising the awareness of the global community regarding the humanitarian impacts of climate change.
  • The Vienna Trafficking Forum organised by the UN.GIFT and the UNODC (February, 2008).
  • The conference for the elimination of poverty in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, organised by the "YES” International Campaign in cooperation with the Azerbaijan government – Ministry of Youth and Sports- under the auspices of the First Lady of Azerbaijan and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, Mehriban Aliyeva, as well as the First Lady of Egypt, Suzanne Mubarak (September, 2008)

OTHER INITIATIVES (HUMANITARIAN/CULTURAL)

Mrs. Marianna V. Vardinoyannis is constantly by the side of those affected by natural or other disasters undertaking initiatives for the relief of the victims,  for promoting Greek culture and upgrading the quality of life of the sensitive social groups.

Among other initiatives, Mrs. Marianna V. Vardinoyannis along with her husband, Mr. Vardis I. Vardinoyannis:

  • undertook the reconstruction of Makistos village in Greece, which was stricken by the devastating fires in August 2007
  • created the Chair of the Greek immigrants and the "Ioannis P. Vardinoyannis" Library at the University of New York
  • created the Constantine Karamanlis Chair in Hellenic and Southeastern European Studies at the Tufts University
  • undertook the construction of a Recreation Centre for Children in the Municipality of Ano Liossia, Athens 
  • undertook the construction of Municipal indoors Athletics Centre "George and Evangelia Bournaki", in Ermioni, Greece
  • organised a concert in memory of Princess Diana in Royal Festival Hall, London
  • organised the lecture of Prof. Helene Ahrweiler entitled "The Birth of European Consciousness” that took place in the Westminster Palace, London
  • organised the event, entitled "Speak Truth to Power", under the auspices of the former President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr Constantinos Stefanopoulos, and published the book of Kerry Kennedy Cuomo in Greek language, whose proceeds were offered to support the Greek department of Amnesty International.

PUBLICATIONS
