The Foundation for the Child and the Family donated a library to the children of this island, which shows the highest birth rate in Greece in recent years. This gift is part of the Foundation's programme for the development and support of the outlying regions of our country.
For the past few months, the children of this beautiful little island have been enjoying their new library. A multitude of books of Greek and foreign literature, school books, encyclopaedias and computers, all housed in a well-lit hall especially converted for library use, are now available to the children of Fournoi.
The library was inaugurated by the President of the Foundation, Mrs Marianna Vardinoyannis, who came to the island accompanied by Mrs Rodi Kratsa, President of the Greek Committee of the "Woman of Europe" Prize, Mrs Marie Paule Poilpot, Director of the Fondation de l'Enfance, and Mr John Bennett, Director of the Childhood and Family Department of UNESCO.
All the inhabitants of the island, led by the Mayor, Mr Kostas Glaros, welcomed the visitors and showed them round the island. During the visit, the children had the opportunity to talk to the Foundation's President about their lives, their dreams and their aspirations, and to thank her for the gift made by the Foundation.
