"World Heritage 2002: Shared legacy, common responsibility "

To mark the 30th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention, UNESCO, with the support of the Government of Italy, organised an International Congress to reflect on some of the main issues, achievements and challenges of the World Heritage mission. The aim of the Congress was to involve participants from intergovernmental, national, regional and local authorities, from foundations, international non-governmental organizations and the private sector in discussing ways of strengthening the World Heritage conservation process. The objectives for the Congress were:

  1. To assess the past 30 years of implementation of the World Heritage Convention with respect to:
  • The protection of natural and cultural heritage worldwide;
  • The development of appropriate national and international heritage protection legislation and practices;
  • Capacity-building at local and regional levels for the management of World Heritage sites.
  1. To promote the World Heritage Convention by:
    • Increasing the visibility of the Convention and the activities undertaken to protect World Heritage;
  • Developing new activities aimed at ensuring long-term site protection and increasing awareness of the need to preserve World Heritage.
  1. To strengthen partnerships for World Heritage conservation by:
  • Identifying opportunities and mobilising support in favour of specific action programmes related to heritage conservation;
  • Creating synergies between World Heritage stakeholders.

The venue of the Congress was the Giorgio Cini Foundation on the island of San Giorgio in Venice, Italy. The Congress was held 14 to 16 November 2002. Approximately 500 participants, from Governmental and Intergovernmental bodies involved in conservation of cultural and natural heritage; private institutions and foundations engaged in conservation projects; NGOs; research institutions; and the media, attended the Congress.

Mrs. Marianna V. Vardinoyannis was member of the Honorary Committee and speaker at the closing of the Conference, together with the First Lady of Egypt, Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, the Director General of UNESCO, Mr. Koichiro Matsuura, and the Goodwill Ambassadors of UNESCO Princess Firyal of Jordan and Mr. Wole Soyinka.

Mrs. Vardinoyannis also sponsored the photographic exhibition "Our Past, Our Future" about the World Heritage that was inaugurated at the new UNESCO offices in Venice on November 14th. The exhibition was inaugurated by the Director General of UNESCO, Mr Koichiro Matsuura, and the Italian Prime Minister Mr. Silvio Berlusconi. At Mrs. Vardinoyannis’ instigation the same exhibition travelled to United Nations headquarters in New York. (December 2002).
