«Speak truth to power» Human rights defenders who change our world Athens, June 2002
A book, a theatre performance and an exhibition of pictures were the three aspects of the event «Speak Truth to Power: Human Rights Defenders who change our world», which was organised in Athens on June 2002 by the Foundation for the Child and the Family, aiming to support the Greek Committee of Amnesty International. The event was held under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Kostis Stefanopoulos, and with the sponsorship of Vardis and Marianna Vardinoyannis.
The book called «Speak Truth to Power: Human Rights Defenders who change our world» is the lifetime work of Kerry Kennedy Cuomo, who came to Athens for the presentation of its edition in Greek. It features the portraits of fifty activists and their shattering stories.
Aried Dorfman created a theatre performance called «Voices beyond Dark» while Ms. Marlena Georgiadis translated it into Greek. The director Mihalis Kakoyannis was responsible for all the artistic aspects of the performance and Mr. George Ikonomou was its director. The actors Thodoris Atheridis, Antigoni Amanitou, Kitty Arsenis, Stelios Mainas, Yannis Voglis, Katia Dandoulakis, Vladimiros Kyriakidis, Constantine Constantopoulos and Themis Bazaka participated in it.
The exhibition of photographs included the portraits of the 50 defenders portrayed in the book «Speak Truth to Power: Human Rights Defenders who change our world», which were all taken by the internationally renowned photographer, Mr. Eddie Adams.
The Mayor of Athens, Mr. Dimitris Avramopoulos, inaugurated the exhibition. The President of the Greek Committee of Amnesty International, Mr Kostis Papaioannou, and the author of the book «Speak Truth to Power», Mrs. Kerry Kennedy Cuomo, addressed the ceremony. In addition, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Tassos Yannitsis, the member of parliament, Mrs. Maria Damanaki, the town councillor of Athens Municipality, Mrs. Aggeliki Kanelopoulou, the ambassadors of Italy and Egypt, as well as renowned Athenians, various artists and well-known businessmen and executives attended this event.
